Kids and social media
I remember being mortified that my mom had an unflattering (according to me) photo of me on her desk at work. I told her I didn’t like that photo and yet — there it was — for all who entered her office to see. And, since she worked in the Capitol, a lot of people saw it.
But, nowadays, kids have to contend with their parents putting their faces on social media and documenting their milestones. I do it. It’s become the norm, really — for all of us to share our lives…funny moments, happy moments, sad moments, proud moments, etc.
But, what do you do when your child is old enough to say, “Mom/Dad, please don’t put my photos on social media”? In my opinion, you honor it.
Gwyneth Paltrow recently shared a photo of herself with daughter Apple on a ski lift on Instagram. Apple is wearing ski goggles and a helmet, but was not happy with her mother posting the photo and she commented as much.
I think Gwyn’s response is so obnoxious. Why didn’t she just take the damn photo down?! But, what’s even more obnoxious, of course — other people’s opinions on Apple not being happy with her mom.
“You are the child Apple, Gwyneth P is the mother. She doesn't need your consent for much of anything. There is nothing wrong with the picture, except you could have smiled.”
“Apple shouldn’t live off her mama’s money then. It’s a pic with your mom brat, get over it.”
“Sit down little girl and show your mother the respect she deserves for the lifestyle you're living #begrateful”
“Your daughter should NOT TELL YOU what to post in YOUR INSTAGRAM! What is wrong with this young lady”
And it goes on and on, as I’m sure you can imagine. What bothers me the most, is that it seems people think Apple is property and her mother owns her. Sorry, I don’t think that’s how parenting works. Are parents responsible for their children? Yes. Does that mean kids sometimes have to do things they don't like to do? Yes, of course. Does it mean we get to embarrass them and make them uncomfortable whenever we want? No. That’s cruel, plain and simple.
It also doesn’t help I’m not a fan of Gwyneth to begin with. I couldn’t help but wonder if her jade egg skills are good enough for the black diamond moguls.
