What style handbag are you?

They say write what you know…and I know handbags. And shoes. But this is about handbags, so…

I love handbags in all shapes, sizes and colors. But, of course I have my personal preference. I often look at someone carrying a handbag, and immediately start to wonder things like, What kind of music do they like? What’s their sense of humor? What do they do for a living? Do they order red or white wine? Do they splurge on bags but stay frugal with their clothes? Was that bag a gift from someone? Do they use this bag every day? And, after years and years of these wonderings, I’ve broken down my observations and assumptions of what my wild imagination runs away with, as I ponder what their chosen handbag shape says about them and their life:

Satchel

You’re a boss. You prefer structure, keep a schedule on your phone AND in a paper planner. You believe everything has a place and you cannot stand clutter. You probably have a million meetings to go to today. You’re never late. You also know how to have fun after hours — and love how your bag looks next to a perfectly made martini so much, you snap a photo you consider posting to Instagram…but then remember how lame those photos are, so you delete it.

Hobo

You’re a bit (or a lot) of a free spirit. You don’t mind digging around a little just to find your keys or sunnies, and appreciate the feel of a bag molding to your body. You have a favorite coffee shop. You love a “lived-in” look, so you thrift most of your bags. You know your bag can hold a lot of stuff, which is important because you never know what the day will bring. You don’t know what Tik Tok is but love bok choy. You’re the one who has an extra bobby pin, tampon or hand wipe to lend a stranger in the restroom. You may not run board meetings, but you definitely know how to command attention.

Crossbody

You’re busy, and require two hands at all times. You need to be able to immediately grab the few things you always have on your person — especially your phone, which is most likely full of photos of your kids and/or pets…and might have a cracked screen. You prefer to walk whenever possible, never pay for parking and people often call you for crockpot recipes. You never hesitate to buy the first round at happy hour, and your friends know you’ll always have their back. Because your hands are always free.

Shoulder

Practical, classy, timeless and functional. You love your pearls, eyelet sundresses and scalloped shorts with flats. You travel light throughout the day, taking a few breaks to head to the ladies to powder your T-zone, because you have the time. After work, you head to happy hour with your girls to talk about your upcoming Bumble date. Sometimes your shoulder bag becomes a crossbody, or even a mini backpack at the farmer’s market, depending on your outfit. You rewatch Gossip Girl at least once a year, your phone case has rhinestones on it, and you order a dragon fruit refresher at Starbucks. Your name might also end in an “ie.”

Backpack

You most likely walk and/or bike a lot because you live in a more metro area. You don’t need to always dig in your bag for something until it’s lunch time, or you decided to stop off at the farmer’s market to buy some fresh produce. You are always inventing things, or coming up with new ideas on how to change the world. You prefer Twitter over Facebook, Venmo over PayPal and you think Google is ruining our society. You like your coffee black, your music loud and are usually hiking on the weekends. You roll your eyes at people who quote movies in conversation and your sarcastic sense of humor is unparalleled.

And, if you don’t use a handbag at all…you are an enigma to me and I want to know more about you immediately.
