Cyber Doppelgängers
I don’t know about you, but I think it’s rare to know everyone on your social media accounts, especially if you follow “influencers” (I seriously despise that term so much), or maybe you’re connected to someone you just met and are still getting to know them.
BUT.
They seem like they’re either inside your brain or you’re sharing the same life. Because, they like the same things you do — TV shows, music, books, etc. — and feel the same way about current events or life situations as you do. They could also be frequenting the same places you go, around the same time of day, even. Maybe…they even look a little like you. I call these people … cyber doppelgängers.
You know you have one if you’ve found yourself saying, “Are we the same person?” and “Get out of my head!” on many of their posts and/or photos.
Personally, I know I have at least two. And, I’ve had a couple instances where a part of me wanted to be like, “Hey…since we clearly share a brain, do you want to be real life friends?” or something like that. Obviously that’s coming on strong, like online dating or something — but it’s often just so awkward to see you can have soooo much in common with someone online, that you can’t help but wonder if it would translate to in-person.
HOWEVER — if you think about it, do you want to have everything in common with a friend? Is it weird to hang out with someone who reminds you so much of yourself? Is that narcissistic? I don’t know. I like to experience new things and learn from people who think differently than I do. Not a whole lot differently, because then you’re in argument/heated debate territory and who needs that added stress? But, would it get boring to be friends with your doppelgänger — agreeing on everything, mirroring each other?
I guess maybe it’s best to just enjoy the connection you have, even if it stays solely on Facebook. And, who knows? If you wind up running into each other at Starbucks or Target, then…it might be friendship fate.
